The hydro-agricultural site of Bossadje, located in Birni N’Gaouré, was the subject of an important inspection visit on Thursday, August 13. This visit aimed to thoroughly assess the progress achieved and the overall impact of the site, which represents a significant and strategic investment in agricultural infrastructure for the region. The full development project, designed to bolster food security and agricultural productivity, carries an overall cost totaling 1,567,237,497 CFA francs TTC. The inspection showed the national commitment to enhancing agricultural capabilities and self-sufficiency.
Rehabilitated Infrastructure and Works
The Bossadje hydro-agricultural site has undergone significant infrastructure enhancements, benefiting from a full rehabilitation of 25 hectares. This key upgrade is complemented by an ambitious expansion that adds an additional 75 hectares to the site's operational area, bringing the total cultivated area to a substantial size. The scope of works realized includes the construction of new irrigation canals, meticulously designed to optimize water distribution across the agricultural plots, ensuring efficient and equitable access to water for all cultivated areas. Extensive plot developments have been undertaken to prepare the land for cultivation, ensuring efficient farming practices and maximizing yield potential. The project also integrated modern equipment to support these agricultural activities, significantly enhancing productivity and resource management within the expanded and rehabilitated zones. These improvements are critical for sustainable agricultural output.
Overcoming Challenges for Growth
The delegation inspecting the site was led by the Governor of the Dosso region, Colonel-Major Bana Alhassane, noting the high-level attention given to the project. The project faced several formidable challenges during its implementation, including the destruction of material, persistent water supply problems, and the arid nature of the terrain, which typically presents significant obstacles to agriculture. To effectively address these multifaceted issues, strong solutions were implemented. These included securing the site to prevent further damage, doubling water resources to ensure an adequate and reliable supply for irrigation, and employing specific, innovative techniques to make the arid terrain fertile and suitable for cultivation.
Official Reactions and Future Vision
The delegation's inspection included other key officials such as the Director General of ONAHA, Colonel Bilaly Elhadj Gambobo, and the PNUD Resident Representative in Niger, M. Mamadou NDaw, showing the collaborative nature of the initiative. M. Mamadou NDaw, the PNUD Resident Representative in Niger, conveyed his strong positive impression, saying, "Entendre mille fois ne vaut pas voir une fois. Ce que nous avons vu ici est impressionnant. La sécurité alimentaire est un pilier du programme de refondation de la République. Investir dans l’agriculture, c’est investir dans le développement économique et social." He further showed the critical role of such projects in national development. The security of the site is currently guaranteed at 100%, according to officials, ensuring the sustainability of the agricultural activities. Following the successful mission, the delegation officially signed the provisional reception of the Bossadje site's infrastructures, marking a significant milestone. The PNUD plans to work towards scaling this successful model by mobilizing additional partners, aiming to replicate its positive impact across other regions.
