The University of Diffa (UDA) was honored with the "Prix National de la Paix (PRINAP)" in the "Meilleure Institution pour la Paix" category on Monday, September 22, 2026. The Haute Autorité à la Consolidation de la Paix (HACP) presented the award during a ceremony. The recognition, received on September 21, 2026, notes the university's mission. The UDA aims to serve as a key space for dialogue, reflection, knowledge dissemination, and peacebuilding efforts. This significant accolade shows the institution's consistent dedication to fostering peace and stability within the region and beyond, a commitment that has been progressively taking shape since 2015.
A New National Recognition
The Prix National de la Paix (PRINAP) represents a new initiative established by the Haute Autorité à la Consolidation de la Paix (HACP) in collaboration with the LAC-LAC network. This marked the inaugural edition of the PRINAP awards. Organizers had planned to distribute a total of ten distinctions across two categories, with five awards designated for individuals and another five for organizations. The award ceremony was intentionally scheduled to coincide with the International Day of Peace, a global observance dedicated to strengthening the ideals of peace. For 2026, the United Nations had set the theme for the International Day of Peace as "Invest in peace for all, everywhere, every day," a message that resonated deeply with the University of Diffa's foundational principles and ongoing work. The University of Diffa's recognition comes despite its relatively young age, having been in existence for less than twelve years. The institution has previously hosted significant events, including a 2020 colloquium that attracted over 300 participants from various African countries and other regions, further solidifying its reputation as a hub for intellectual exchange and peace initiatives.
UDA's Long-Term Commitment to Peace
The University of Diffa was established in August 2014, and its focus on peace, security, and sustainable development began to take shape progressively starting in 2015. This early commitment laid the groundwork for its future endeavors. The institution organized its inaugural international conference on the culture of peace from November 2 to 4, 2015. This foundational conference drew more than 100 participants, representing 19 universities and 11 countries, demonstrating an early regional and international reach in its peacebuilding efforts. The conference served as a critical platform for discussions on promoting a culture of peace in challenging environments.
In May 2016, the university collaborated with the Haute Autorité à la Consolidation de la Paix (HACP), the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC), and Civil-Military Activities to co-organize an international symposium focused on security. This collaboration noted the multi-sectoral approach UDA adopts in addressing complex security challenges. Following this, a multidisciplinary team from the University of Diffa conducted investigations in Diffa, Bosso, and N’Guigmi between September and October 2016. These rigorous investigations documented 99 conflict situations within the region, providing key data for understanding local dynamics and informing peacebuilding strategies. The findings from these investigations contributed to a deeper understanding of the specific challenges faced by communities in the Lake Chad Basin.
The university participated in organizing a regional forum on border management in March 2017. This event received key support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Japanese government, and it gathered approximately 120 participants, fostering dialogue on key aspects of cross-border cooperation and security. Later in 2017, the University of Diffa hosted a symposium dedicated to the themes of deradicalization and the reintegration of repentants, addressing critical issues related to extremism and social cohesion. These events showed UDA's proactive role in tackling pressing societal issues through academic discourse and practical engagement.
From September 30 to October 3, 2019, the University of Diffa organized a forum addressing natural resource management in the Diffa region. This forum recognized the intrinsic link between environmental resources, livelihoods, and potential for conflict, seeking sustainable solutions. The institution further demonstrated its engagement by organizing an international scientific colloquium in December 2020. This colloquium was titled "Lake Chad Basin: Changes, Vulnerabilities, Security and Resilience," bringing together experts to discuss the multifaceted challenges facing the vital Lake Chad Basin and explore pathways to resilience and stability. The 2020 colloquium, which attracted over 300 participants from several African countries and other regions, served as a testament to the university's growing influence and its ability to convene diverse stakeholders on critical regional issues. A "Cellule Paix et Développement" (Peace and Development Unit) was established at the UDA by decree on December 22, 2015, formalizing its institutional commitment to peace and development initiatives.
Building Peace Through Education and Projects
Between 2018 and 2019, the University of Diffa (UDA) contributed significantly to training 30 young people per commune in 12 communes on governance, citizenship, and conflict management as part of the BANA project. This grassroots initiative empowered local youth with essential skills for community leadership and conflict resolution. In 2022, the UDA further extended its outreach by training public officials in four communes on responsible citizenship, good governance, and conflict management within the framework of the RESILAC project. These training programs are vital for strengthening local capacities and promoting peaceful coexistence.
The UDA has also proposed the creation of an International Institute for Peace, Dialogue, and Development (2IP2D), an ambitious initiative that would offer four bachelor's and six master's specializations. This proposed institute aims to institutionalize advanced studies and research in peacebuilding, dialogue, and sustainable development, further positioning UDA as a regional leader in these fields. In partnership with UNHCR, the university assisted in developing three farms—agropastoral, agricultural, and piscicultural—at Sayam Forage for refugees. This practical project provides sustainable livelihood opportunities and addresses food security for vulnerable populations, demonstrating UDA's commitment to tangible impact.
The University of Diffa operates a Sub-Regional Doctoral School named "Peace, Security, Environment and Sustainable Development." This specialized doctoral school reflects the university's interdisciplinary approach to critical regional issues. It has seen a significant increase in enrollment, growing from 11 doctoral students in 2022 to 196 in 2025, indicating a strong demand for advanced studies in these key areas. Students enrolled in the program originate from Niger, Chad, Cameroon, and Burkina Faso, reflecting its broad regional scope and collaborative spirit. By the time of the report, twelve theses had been successfully defended, contributing new knowledge and expertise to the fields of peace, security, environment, and sustainable development. The fourth edition of the Doctoriales for this doctoral school commenced in February 2026, providing a platform for doctoral candidates to present their research. This 2026 Doctoriales event registered a total of 72 scientific presentations, showcasing the vibrant research activity within the school.
Academic Specializations and Future Vision
The University of Diffa's specialization areas include ecology and environment, according to its Rector, Dr (MC) Moussa Mamoudou Boubacar. These specializations are critical for addressing the environmental challenges prevalent in the Sahel region and the Lake Chad Basin. Rector Boubacar noted the university's key role in training professionals in animal production, plant production, pastoral and water resource management, and environmental and sustainable development during a March 2024 interview with ANP. This full approach ensures that graduates are equipped to tackle the complex interdependencies between environmental health, livelihoods, and peace. The institution offers specialized training in environment, ecology, agronomy, agroecology, and sustainable land management, providing a strong academic foundation for future practitioners and researchers.
In 2026, the University of Diffa launched a UNIPOD initiative aimed at stimulating youth innovation and agripreneurship. This program seeks to empower young people to develop innovative solutions in the agricultural sector, fostering economic growth and resilience. The university also organized the Diffa stage of Niger Digital Day in September 2026 to strengthen youth digital skills, recognizing the importance of digital literacy in modern development. Earlier in 2026, specifically in January, the university partnered with the NGO Jeunesse, Action et Leadership (JAL), further expanding its network of collaborators dedicated to youth empowerment and community development. The Minister of Higher Education visited the University of Diffa in February 2026 and praised its progress, acknowledging the significant strides made by the institution in a relatively short period. The University of Diffa has been a member of the Agence universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF) since 2025, connecting it to a wider international academic community and fostering opportunities for collaboration and exchange. These ongoing initiatives and partnerships show the University of Diffa's dynamic approach to education, research, and community engagement, all contributing to its overarching mission of peacebuilding and sustainable development.
