Young Leaders Trained to Combat Disinformation in Dosso

A training workshop for young leaders from the eleven communes of the Department of Dosso officially opened on Saturday, August 08, in the Meeting Hall of the Governorate of Dosso. The Association Nigérienne des Web-Activistes (ANIWEB) initiated this key two-day event, designed to empower local youth. Chief Squadron Boubacar Alichina Goga, the Prefect of the Department of Dosso, presided over the ceremony, marking the official launch of the program. He urged participants to become "actors of solution, relays of social cohesion, and bulwarks against online hate and discrimination," emphasizing the vital role they would play in their communities. The training aims to equip these young leaders with essential skills to combat disinformation effectively within their respective communities, fostering a more informed and cohesive society.

Combating Digital Threats

During his address, the Prefect of the Department of Dosso observed that while the internet and social networks serve as valuable tools for development and education, they have unfortunately also become vectors for the propagation of false information, diffusion of hate speech, and manipulations. These digital threats, he noted, can significantly weaken peace and social cohesion within communities, posing a serious challenge to societal stability. He specifically urged participants to become "actors of solution, relays of social cohesion, and bulwarks against online hate and discrimination," showing the critical role young leaders play in mitigating the negative impacts of digital platforms and promoting responsible online engagement.

Workshop Content and Support

The full training program is structured to encompass both theoretical and practical components. Participants will engage in various interactive activities including group work, awareness simulations, case studies, and exercises specifically focused on information analysis. This hands-on approach is designed to provide a strong learning experience, enabling the young leaders to apply their knowledge effectively in real-world scenarios. Prefect Boubacar Alichina Goga further stated that prefectural authorities and the department's technical services would provide unwavering support for initiatives that emerge from this training, ensuring that the participants' efforts receive the necessary institutional backing. This commitment notes the local government's dedication to the success and sustainability of the program.

Funding and Future Impact

The Prefect, Boubacar Alichina Goga, encouraged the young leaders to function as "Digital Scouts," stressing the critical importance of verifying information prior to its dissemination. This role involves not only identifying misinformation but also actively promoting accurate narratives. He also advocated for a patriotic and responsible approach to using social networks among participants, urging them to consider the broader societal implications of their online activities. The event received vital financial support from International Media Support (IMS), an organization dedicated to strengthening media and communication in fragile regions. This funding was instrumental in making the two-day workshop possible, providing the resources necessary for its successful execution and the development of future community initiatives.

Call to Action

In a clear directive, the Prefect of the Department of Dosso instructed local officials to provide full support to the 22 selected young leaders in their awareness missions on the ground. This directive aims to facilitate the smooth implementation of the skills acquired during the training, ensuring that the participants can effectively reach and educate their communities. The young leaders are expected to play a key role in disseminating verified information and actively countering false narratives within their communities, thereby contributing to a more informed public discourse. Their efforts will be supported by municipal authorities and technical services, ensuring a coordinated approach to combating disinformation across the region. The training initiative seeks to empower these individuals to become active agents in promoting social cohesion and accurate communication, ultimately fostering a resilient and well-informed society in Dosso.
