Agadez launched the second phase of its drainage works on Thursday, aiming to combat floods and enhance urban resilience against climate hazards. The project represents a significant investment of 2.56 billion FCFA TTC. These efforts are designed to improve living conditions for residents and strengthen the city's ability to withstand environmental challenges, particularly those posed by heavy rainfall and its consequences. The launch of this second phase shows the city's proactive approach to infrastructure development and climate adaptation.

Detailed Project Scope

The drainage works are projected to span an intensive period of eight months, demonstrating a commitment to timely completion. The full program encompasses the construction of multiple essential drainage roads, specifically designed to efficiently direct rainwater towards the Aghazarmadran kori. This strategic channeling of water is key for mitigating flood risks across various parts of the city.

One primary axis, measuring a substantial 2,770 meters, will establish a vital connection from the bustling Tekazamt market to the kori, passing directly by the Abzine 1 primary school. This particular segment is expected to significantly improve water management in a key commercial and educational area. In a separate, yet equally important, development, a 430-meter link is scheduled for construction, connecting the cemetery gate directly to the kori. This connection will provide critical drainage for another distinct urban zone.

Additionally, a 452-meter drainage road will be meticulously built alongside the National Guard camp within the Misrata district, addressing specific flood vulnerabilities in that area. A 510-meter section of drainage infrastructure, further complemented by a 515-meter gutter, will create a vital connection from the old Rotchi hospital to the kori. This multi-faceted approach ensures that diverse and critical locations within Agadez benefit from enhanced drainage capabilities, contributing to the overall resilience of the urban environment. Each of these segments is strategically placed to maximize the project's impact on flood control and urban infrastructure protection.

Project Goals and Context

The drainage operation forms an integral part of the broader Integrated Urban Development and Multisectoral Resilience Project (PIDUREM). This overarching project aims to foster sustainable urban growth and bolster the capacity of cities to respond to various environmental and climate-related challenges. The infrastructures being developed under this phase are specifically designed to enhance control over water flow and significantly mitigate damage caused by heavy rainfall, which has historically posed a threat to the city.

A primary objective of the project is to strengthen the resilience of Agadez to climate hazards, ensuring the long-term safety and well-being of its inhabitants. By effectively managing rainwater, the project aims to improve traffic flow within Agadez, reducing disruptions caused by flooded roads and making daily commutes safer and more efficient. Concurrently, these works are critical for protecting homes from erosion, a common issue in areas prone to uncontrolled water runoff, thereby safeguarding residential properties and community assets.

Additionally, the works are intended to provide substantial support for local economic activities, particularly those concentrated around the vibrant Tekazamt market. By safeguarding infrastructure and facilitating movement during adverse weather conditions, the project ensures that businesses can operate more consistently and without significant interruptions, contributing to the economic stability and growth of the region. The full nature of these goals shows the project's holistic approach to urban development and climate adaptation, aiming to create a more secure, accessible, and economically strong Agadez.

Official Calls and Community Support

Ibra Boulama Issa, the Governor of Agadez, officially launched the second phase of these critical works. In his address, Governor Issa urged the company undertaking the work, the control office responsible for oversight, and all other stakeholders involved in the project to adhere strictly to technical standards and to respect the eight-month completion deadline. He emphasized the importance of precision and efficiency to ensure the project's success and the timely delivery of its benefits to the community.

Governor Issa also extended a direct invitation to the residents of Agadez to support the project actively. He showed that community cooperation and understanding are vital elements to ensure its smooth execution, minimizing potential disruptions and fostering a sense of shared ownership in the city's development. This call for collective effort notes the collaborative spirit deemed essential for the successful implementation of such significant urban infrastructure initiatives, ultimately benefiting all who live and work in Agadez.
