N’Guigmi Launches "1 Citizen, 1 Tree" Initiative to Plant 20,000 Neem Trees

The Commune urbaine de N’Guigmi, located in the Diffa region of Niger, has launched a new environmental initiative titled "1 citoyen, 1 arbre" (1 Citizen, 1 Tree). This ambitious program aims to promote extensive reforestation efforts within the community, specifically planning for the planting of 20,000 Neem (Azadirachta indica) plants. The initiative shows a dedicated commitment to ecological restoration and sustainable development in the area.

The initiative is spearheaded by the Administrateur délégué of the Commune urbaine de N’Guigmi, Commissaire divisionnaire de police Alhassane Mounkaila. His leadership is driving the implementation of this significant project, which seeks to engage a broad spectrum of local stakeholders. The news of this initiative, noting its objectives and scope, was published in August 2026, marking a key moment for environmental action in N’Guigmi.

Building on Past Success and Setting New Standards

The "1 Citizen, 1 Tree" project is designed to plant a total of 20,000 Neem (Azadirachta indica) plants across the commune. This initiative builds upon previous successful reforestation efforts in N’Guigmi, demonstrating a continued and strengthened commitment to environmental stewardship.

During the 2025 edition of the Journée nationale de l’Arbre, the commune successfully planted 8,000 Neem plants, laying a foundation for the current, larger-scale endeavor. That previous campaign demonstrated a notable success rate, with 89.5% of the planted trees thriving, indicating effective planning and community involvement. For the current "1 Citizen, 1 Tree" initiative, organizers aim to surpass this figure significantly, not only in terms of the number of trees but also in their long-term survival. The new program sets an ambitious target to guarantee a survival rate for young plants superior to 97%. This objective reflects a deep commitment to ensuring the long-term viability of the newly planted trees and maximizing the environmental impact of the initiative. The commune aims to plant 20,000 new Neem trees, a substantial increase that reflects the urgency and scale of the environmental challenges being addressed.

Infrastructure for Long-Term Sustainability

The Commune urbaine de N’Guigmi plans to plant 20,000 new Neem trees as part of its "1 citoyen, 1 arbre" initiative. This extensive reforestation effort is supported by significant infrastructure development, designed to ensure the successful establishment and growth of the saplings. In 2026, a substantial investment exceeding 11.5 million FCFA was allocated to establish a 1.2-hectare communal wood, providing a dedicated and protected area for the new plantings.

The communal wood features a full infrastructure specifically designed to support the growth and survival of the planted trees. This includes a strong fenced enclosure, providing essential protection for the young saplings against external factors. Additionally, the site is equipped with a borehole that incorporates a modern solar pumping system, ensuring a sustainable and reliable water supply, key for arid regions. An advanced Californian irrigation network has been installed to efficiently distribute water directly to the plants, minimizing waste and maximizing absorption. Further enhancing water management capabilities, a 5,000-liter water tower has been constructed within the communal wood, providing necessary water storage and pressure for the irrigation system. These meticulously planned facilities are intended to provide the optimal conditions for the successful establishment and long-term viability of the new Neem trees, demonstrating a holistic approach to reforestation.

Fostering Community Engagement and a Vision for the Future

The "1 Citizen, 1 Tree" initiative seeks to integrate all segments of the community, aiming to make every citizen, household, technical service, school, civil society organization, project, non-governmental organization (NGO), company, and Security and Defense Forces (FDS) a direct participant in environmental protection efforts. This full approach is designed to achieve multiple objectives, including the creation of more shaded areas, the restoration of productive bases, and the combatting of climate change effects within the commune. The program intends to strengthen social cohesion, sensitize younger generations to environmental issues, and promote broader citizen engagement in ecological stewardship, fostering a shared sense of responsibility for the environment.

To foster this widespread participation, the Administrateur délégué called on residents of N’Guigmi and its diaspora to sponsor a tree, encouraging both local and international support for the initiative. The commune expresses its hope that this campaign will serve as a national model for the participatory management of tree heritage, inspiring similar initiatives across Niger. This initiative aligns smoothly with Niger's broader national Refondation dynamic, which places a significant emphasis on community involvement and collective action for national development and environmental sustainability. Through "1 Citizen, 1 Tree," N’Guigmi is not only planting trees but also cultivating a culture of environmental responsibility and community solidarity.
