The international scientific colloquium on the centenary of Niamey opened on 13 October 2026. Organizers convened the event to mark 100 years of the city's history. Participants are gathering to discuss the development and trajectory of the capital through a series of academic presentations and panel discussions.

The colloquium is held under the theme "100 ans d’histoire, de résilience et d’avenir". This theme, translated as "100 years of history, resilience and future", serves as the primary intellectual framework for the various sessions scheduled during the three-day gathering. Abdourahamane Oumarou noted that the sessions will examine how the city has maintained its status through a century of change. Scholars and officials attending the opening sessions intend to address the urban evolution of the site since its founding. The program remains scheduled throughout the week, with various researchers contributing to the formal documentation of the city's centennial milestones.

Event Scope and Duration

The event is scheduled to last for three days. Organizers have structured the program to accommodate various academic presentations and panel discussions within this timeframe. Participants will remain engaged in the scientific exploration of the capital’s trajectory until the conclusion of these sessions. The structured schedule allows for a full review of the historical data and urban planning records that define the city's path. Attendees are expected to participate in rigorous debates regarding the socioeconomic factors that have influenced the capital over the past century.

M. Abdourahamane Oumarou, Minister of Refoundation and Promotion of Social Values, presided over the opening ceremony. During his address, he reflected on the significance of the centenary, stating, "l’histoire de notre..." as he addressed the assembly of scholars and local officials. His involvement as the presiding official marks the formal oversight of the proceedings by the government. The Minister emphasized the importance of academic rigor in preserving the collective memory of the city.

Municipal authorities of Niamey initiated the colloquium and provided the necessary support for its realization. The city government requested the event to ensure the academic documentation of the urban development of the site. This collaboration between local administrative leadership and the research community seeks to provide a formal record of the milestones reached since the founding of the city. By facilitating this exchange, the municipal authorities aim to create a lasting repository of information that will serve future generations of historians and urban planners. The support provided by the city includes logistical arrangements and the provision of venues for the academic participants to conduct their work. This institutional backing shows the commitment of the local government to the intellectual preservation of the capital's heritage. The colloquium stands as a central pillar of the city's centennial observances, bringing together diverse perspectives to analyze the historical trajectory of Niamey.
